The difference between marketing and advertising goes far beyond simple semantics.  There are fundamental distinctions in strategy, messaging, tone, and delivery.  Marketing is long term, branding, and depth.  Advertising is short term, sales, and width.  Both are incredibly important, but should never be combined.
